HMS Philomel (1890) - World War I

World War I

With the outbreak of war in August 1914 she formed part of the ocean escort for the New Zealand Force which occupied German Samoa (now Samoa). Following this, the ship helped escort the main body of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force as far as Western Australia. The cruiser then sailed for the Middle East.

In 1915 Philomel operated in the Mediterranean. On 8 February she landed an armed party in Southern Turkey where a large force of Turkish soldiers were encountered, resulting in three seamen being killed and three wounded. Subsequently Philomel was deployed in the Red Sea and in the Persian Gulf. Throughout these operations Philomel was operated as a New Zealand ship, at the cost of the New Zealand Government.

Famous quotes containing the words war i, world and/or war:

“... War is for everyone, for children too.
    I wasn’t going to tell you and I mustn’t.

And have our fire and laugh and be afraid.”
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

It is only shallow people who do not judge by appearances. The true mystery of the world is the visible, not the invisible.
    Oscar Wilde (1854–1900)

Physical nature lies at our feet shackled with a hundred chains. What of the control of human nature? Do not point to the triumphs of psychiatry, social services or the war against crime. Domination of human nature can only mean the domination of every man by himself.
    Johan Huizinga (1872–1945)
