HMS Barham (04) - Film of The Sinking

Film of The Sinking

The sinking of Barham was captured on film. In consideration of public morale and in order to protect the families who had lost loved ones, the Admiralty decided to keep the film secret until the end of hostilities in 1945.

The film of the sinking has been reused many times as stock footage in documentaries. It has also been used fictionally in such films as Earth vs. the Flying Saucers (where it is described as an American destroyer), Task Force (as a Japanese carrier), The Guns of Navarone and The Battle of Okinawa (where it stands in for the Yamato). It has also been featured in the music video for the Red Hot Chili Peppers cover "Higher Ground".

Famous quotes containing the words film of, film and/or sinking:

His education lay like a film of white oil on the black lake of his barbarian consciousness. For this reason, the things he said were hardly interesting at all. Only what he was.
    —D.H. (David Herbert)

Film is more than the twentieth-century art. It’s another part of the twentieth-century mind. It’s the world seen from inside. We’ve come to a certain point in the history of film. If a thing can be filmed, the film is implied in the thing itself. This is where we are. The twentieth century is on film.... You have to ask yourself if there’s anything about us more important than the fact that we’re constantly on film, constantly watching ourselves.
    Don Delillo (b. 1926)

We of the sinking middle class ... may sink without further struggles into the working class where we belong, and probably when we get there it will not be so dreadful as we feared, for, after all, we have nothing to lose but our aitches.
    George Orwell (1903–1950)
