Freight Yards and Motive Power Depot
The nearby freight yards were an important strategic location for cross-London freight trains from circa 1910-1970. As a result the SR opened a new motive power depot to the south of the station in 1933. In 1947, the sheds were the scene of a serious boiler explosion, where both driver and fireman were severely scalded, but survived. The depot closed to steam in 1961 and was converted to Hither Green Traction Maintenance Depot
