History Of South Tyrol
The modern-day South Tyrol, an autonomous Italian province created in 1948, was originally part of the Austro-Hungarian County of Tyrol until 1918 (then known as Deutschsüdtirol and occasionally Mitteltirol). Its area was annexed by Italy following the defeat of the Central Powers in World War I. The area has been part of a cross border joint entity, the Euroregion Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino, since 2001.

Famous quotes containing the words history and/or south:
“The visual is sorely undervalued in modern scholarship. Art history has attained only a fraction of the conceptual sophistication of literary criticism.... Drunk with self-love, criticism has hugely overestimated the centrality of language to western culture. It has failed to see the electrifying sign language of images.”
—Camille Paglia (b. 1947)
“To lib and die in Dixie!
Away, away, away down South in Dixie!”
—Daniel Decatur Emmett (18151904)
