History of Shanghai

The history of Shanghai, spanning over a thousand years, closely parallels the development of modern China. Originally a small agricultural village, Shanghai developed during the late Qing Dynasty as one of China's principal trading ports. Since economic reforms reached it during the early 1990s, it has burgeoned to become one of Asia's financial centers and the busiest container port in the world.
