Culture of Ancient Russia (989-1480)

The years of the Middle Ages in Russia are from the adoption of Christianity in 989 until the early 19th century. The period lasted longer in Russia than in the rest of Europe. Byzantine Empire heavily influenced Russian culture with the construction of cathedrals but Russia's size let pagan practices last for several centuries in rebellious principalities. Famous quotes containing the words culture, ancient and/or russia:

Our culture still holds mothers almost exclusively responsible when things go wrong with the kids. Sensing this ultimate accountability, women are understandably reluctant to give up control or veto power. If the finger of blame was eventually going to point in your direction, wouldn’t you be?
    Ron Taffel (20th century)

Universal empire is the prerogative of a writer. His concerns are with all mankind, and though he cannot command their obedience, he can assign them their duty. The Republic of Letters is more ancient than monarchy, and of far higher character in the world than the vassal court of Britain.
    Thomas Paine (1737–1809)

... gathering news in Russia was like mining coal with a hatpin.
    Mary Heaton Vorse (1874–1966)
