The history of the Eastern Roman Empire (324-1453) is generally considered to fall into three distinct eras:
- Late Roman Empire: Fourth to 7th centuries
- Middle Byzantine Empire: Seventh to 11th centuries
- Late Empire: Eleventh to 15th centuries
