His Master's Voice

His Master's Voice in abbreviation HMV (also in French La Voix de Son MaƮtre, in German Die Stimme seines Herrn, in Italian La voce del padrone, in Spanish La voz de su amo) is a trademark in the music business, and for many years was the name of a large record label. The name was coined in 1899 as the title of a painting of the dog Nipper listening to a wind-up gramophone. In the photograph on which the painting was based, the dog was listening to a phonograph cylinder.

Famous quotes containing the words master and/or voice:

Love and joy come to you,
    And to your wassail too,
—Unknown. God Bless the Master of This House (l. 5–6)

Prose—it might be speculated—is discourse; poetry ellipsis. Prose is spoken aloud; poetry overheard. The one is presumably articulate and social, a shared language, the voice of “communication”; the other is private, allusive, teasing, sly, idiosyncratic as the spider’s delicate web, a kind of witchcraft unfathomable to ordinary minds.
    Joyce Carol Oates (b. 1938)
