Hine's Emerald Dragonfly

The Hine's Emerald Dragonfly (Somatochlora hineana) is a dragonfly in the family Corduliidae.

Globally, the species is extremely rare. The largest breeding population known is in Door County, Wisconsin. The only other known populations occur at small sites in northern Michigan, northeastern Illinois, and recently discovered sites in Missouri and Ontario.

One site where the species is present in good numbers is The Ridges Sanctuary in Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin.

Hine's Emerald is listed on the United States Federal List of Endangered Species, the only species of Odonata so listed.

Famous quotes containing the words hine and/or emerald:

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
consider all the works thy hand hath made,
I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder,
thy pow’r thro’out the universe displayed.
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee,
    How great thou art!
    —Stuart K. Hine (b. 1899)

Well, Mr. Thornton, you are a wonder. It looks the way all Irish cottages should and so seldom do. And only an American would have thought of emerald green.
    Frank S. Nugent (1908–1965)
