Gums and Thickeners
Using conventional agitators, it's difficult to avoid clumping when mixing gums and thickeners. Consequently, most directions for mixing gums and thickeners advise adding the powder to the liquid slowly to reduce the formation of lumps and fisheyes. This is because normal agitators cannot easily break down agglomerates and fisheyes. In contrast, when using an efficient high shear in-line mixer, powder should be added to the liquid all at once in a quick, but controlled manner.
The mixing action (also called "shearing") of the rotor workhead of a high shear in-line mixer swiftly breaks up and hydrates powder before its thickness starts to increase, ensuring that a consistent lump-free solution is attained with maximum yield and consistent, repeatable results.
