Henry W. Grady - Support For White Supremacy

Support For White Supremacy

Grady's conception of the New South was based on the social supremacy of whites over blacks. Grady stated in 1888: "the supremacy of the white race of the South must be maintained forever, and the domination of the negro race resisted at all points and at all hazards, because the white race is the superior race... shall run forever with the blood that feeds Anglo-Saxon hearts".

Famous quotes containing the words support for, support, white and/or supremacy:

    The community and family networks which helped sustain earlier generations have become scarcer for growing numbers of young parents. Those who lack links to these traditional sources of support are hard-pressed to find other resources, given the emphasis in our society on providing treatment services, rather than preventive services and support for health maintenance and well-being.
    Bernice Weissbourd (20th century)

    The purpose of punishment is to improve those who do the punishing—that is the final recourse of those who support punishment.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)

    Flower sent to flower;
    for white hands, the lesser white,
    less lovely of flower leaf.
    Hilda Doolittle (1886–1961)

    In America the taint of sectarianism lies broad upon the land. Not content with acknowledging the supremacy as the Diety, and with erecting temples in his honor, where all can bow down with reverence, the pride and vanity of human reason enter into and pollute our worship, and the houses that should be of God and for God, alone, where he is to be honored with submissive faith, are too often merely schools of metaphysical and useless distinctions. The nation is sectarian, rather than Christian.
    James Fenimore Cooper (1789–1851)
