Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 573 people, 259 households, and 182 families residing in the town. The population density was 653.2 people per square mile (251.4/km²). There were 278 housing units at an average density of 316.9 per square mile (122.0/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 80.80% White, 18.50% African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.17% from other races, and 0.17% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.17% of the population. (The Hispanic population of the area is growing rapidly, and the statistics are probably much lower than present reality.)
There were 259 households out of which 26.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.4% were married couples living together, 15.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% were non-families. 29.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.21 and the average family size was 2.71.
In the town the population was spread out with 22.3% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 21.3% from 25 to 44, 26.7% from 45 to 64, and 23.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 82.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 75.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $28,250, and the median income for a family was $50,179. Males had a median income of $28,125 versus $20,987 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,888. About 9.9% of families and 13.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.2% of those under age 18 and 15.6% of those age 65 or over.
