Helsinki Class Missile Boat

Helsinki Class Missile Boat

The Helsinki class missile boats (Finnish: Helsinki-luokan ohjusvene) are a type of vessel which were in use by the Finnish Navy. They were the predecessors of the Rauma class missile boats. All the ships were constructed at the Wärtsilä Helsinki Shipyard, Finland, and had Pansio as their homeport.

The vessels were designed as fast attack crafts, but designated "missile boats" in the Finnish Navy, as to tone down their offensive capabilities. They were armed with up to eight RBS-15 SSMs, one dual-purpose Bofors 57 mm gun, 2 × 23 mm double-barreled anti-aircraft guns and two depth charge racks.

As planned during the late 1990s, the class was due to undergo a mid-life upgrade through 2006–2008 but this was rejected because of budget restrains. The ships were decommissioned from Finnish service, and Helsinki and Turku were used for testing purposes before they were scrapped in 2011.

Famous quotes containing the words class, missile and/or boat:

Take away from the courts, if it could be taken away, the power to issue injunctions in labor disputes, and it would create a privileged class among the laborers and save the lawless among their number from a most needful remedy available to all men for the protection of their business interests against unlawful invasion.... The secondary boycott is an instrument of tyranny, and ought not to be made legitimate.
    William Howard Taft (1857–1930)

... the truth is the hardest missile one can be pelted with.
George Eliot [Mary Ann (or Marian)

The kind of power mothers have is enormous. Take the skyline of Istanbul—enormous breasts, pathetic little willies, a final revenge on Islam. I was so scared I had to crouch in the bottom of the boat when I saw it.
    Angela Carter (1940–1992)
