Helsinki Air Defence Regiment

Helsinki Air Defence Regiment (Helsingin Ilmatorjuntarykmentti, HelItR) is a part of the Armoured Brigade in Parola. The regiment was before an independent Finnish Army unit located in Hyrylä (in Tuusula municipality, some 30 km from Helsinki). The regiment trained 800 conscripts per year.

In 2005 the Minister of Defence Seppo Kääriäinen announced that the garrison in Hyrylä would be closed as part of a major structural change of the Finnish Defence Forces. This took place on January 1, 2007. The operations of the regiment moved to Armoured Brigade at Parola. Closing of the garrison will save the Defence Forces about 5 million euro per year.

Famous quotes containing the words air, defence and/or regiment:

A slight daily unconscious luxury is hardly ever wanting to the dwellers in civilisation; like the gentle air of a genial climate, it is a perpetual minute enjoyment.
    Walter Bagehot (1826–1877)

What cannot stand must fall; and the measure of our sincerity and therefore of the respect of men, is the amount of health and wealth we will hazard in the defence of our right. An old farmer, my neighbor across the fence, when I ask him if he is not going to town-meeting, says: “No, ‘t is no use balloting, for it will not stay; but what you do with the gun will stay so.”
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

What makes a regiment of soldiers a more noble object of view than the same mass of mob? Their arms, their dresses, their banners, and the art and artificial symmetry of their position and movements.
    George Gordon Noel Byron (1788–1824)
