Helm

Helm may refer to:

  • a ship's steering mechanism; see tiller and ship's wheel. Derived meanings:
    • The verb meaning to steer, as in "to helm a yacht".
    • A gender-neutral term for helmsman
    • metaphorically, a position of leadership or control
    • the Unicode "helm symbol" ⎈ (U+2388), see Miscellaneous Technical (Unicode)
  • The great helm, a type of helmet that completely covers the head and is supported by the shoulders. Derived meanings:
    • helmet or helm in heraldry
    • Hełm coat of arms, a Polish coat of arms. (Unrelated to the Polish city, see below)
  • HELM (abbrev.), the holomorphic embedding load flow method is a new mathematical technique that solves the load-flow problem in electrical grids through direct methods, instead of numerical iteration (power engineering).
