Critical Reception
Hellfighters received mostly negative reviews, garnering a 13% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (one "Fresh" rating and seven "Rotten" ratings). Dennis Schwartz of Ozus' World Movie Reviews summarized the film as "a dull adventure tale about macho men who fight oil fires". Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times described the movie as a "slow moving, talkative, badly plotted bore".
On a more positive note, A. H. Weiler of The New York Times noted that John Wayne made "actionful, if not stirringly meaningful, child's play of exotic disasters" and remarked that "the unrestrained cast and director maintain a welcome sense of humor".

Famous quotes containing the words critical and/or reception:
“Post-modernism has cut off the present from all futures. The daily media add to this by cutting off the past. Which means that critical opinion is often orphaned in the present.”
—John Berger (b. 1926)
“To the United States the Third World often takes the form of a black woman who has been made pregnant in a moment of passion and who shows up one day in the reception room on the forty-ninth floor threatening to make a scene. The lawyers pay the woman off; sometimes uniformed guards accompany her to the elevators.”
—Lewis H. Lapham (b. 1935)
