- Part of the presidential debate is a verbatim repeat of Monty Python's Argument Sketch.
- Mays Gilliam's name is a reference to Willie Mays, who most baseball fans and historians agree was the greatest all-around baseball player to have played in Major League Baseball.
- Mays Gilliam's name also is a reference to Jim Gilliam. Gilliam played for the Brooklyn Dodgers. He was the 1953 NL Rookie of the Year.
