Hayfield's high school teams compete in the AAA National District of the AAA Northern Region of the Virginia High School League. The school's mascot is the hawk and the school colors are orange and white (and unofficially black). There were eras when the teams wore brown (1980's) or navy blue (1990's-2000's) to compliment the main color orange.
The boys' wrestling team, coached by Roy Hill, won districts 9 years in a row. As well as, 6 Northern region titles in 8 years(1999–2006). Coach Hill has coached 5 individual state champions.
The Hayfield varsity football team won the National District title against rival Thomas A. Edison High School in 2009. The varsity volleyball team won districts to continue the Hawks' dominance in their new district. Hayfield's varsity cross country team placed second in districts in 2009. In spring of 2010, the varsity softball team won the National District title after beating Yorktown High School.
VARSITY BASEBALL has been consistently competitive over the years, despite only having won 2 championships in 40+ years. Rocky Jacobs was the father of Hawks Baseball, leading the team from its inception. Things couldn't have started better for the Hawks. Alan Breed threw a no-hitter against rival Mt. Vernon in the first ever varsity game in 1970. Ron Simms is Hayfield's all-time wins leader, coaching the team for 13 years. He brought notoriety to the program for the beautiful field he created and maintained, dubbing it the "Hayfield of Dreams". It was his 2002 team that would win the school's 1st ever district title. Among the great players during this era were Jeremy Cleveland, who could do it all and held nearly every school record until 2011, and Glen Skutnik, a fireballing workhorse on the mound who still holds pitching records for career wins (26), strikeouts (318) and innings (262 2/3). A Simms assistant, Mark Luther, would lead the team to the state tournament for the 1st time in 2005—ironically with a losing record (13-14). Former Hawk Mike Gallagher took over in 06 and led the team to a 1st place record during the regular season, another first. Standout Mike Marion was phenomenal that season, blasting 10 HR's and collecting 32 RBI's. Then, the 2011 squad (under Coach Jimmy Linza) finally put it all together for the program, winning the district title in spectacular fashion (17-16 at Yorktown) en route to a sparkling 20-4 record (best in school history) and setting numerous school records along the way. Among them: the biggest win in school history 36-0 victory @ Falls Church, .399 team batting average (52 points higher than 2nd highest in 2010), 281 runs scored (92 more than 2nd highest in 2010), and an amazing 40 home runs. The offense was legendary, but the team couldn't have brought home the title without ace pitcher Cory Spera, who led the staff and would come on in relief to close the title game. He also threw the program's only perfect game (2010). Also among this group of champions were two of the best offensive players to ever play for the Hawks. Bryan DiRosario's 2011 season produced 15 HR's and 44 RBI's, giving him career totals of 19 and 75—all school records. Josh Eldridge was arguably the best of them all, setting season/career records for hits (44/111), doubles (16/31), triples (4/8), stolen bases (31 career), batting average (.564 season), on base percentage (.577 career). VARSITY LACROSSE Hayfield's varsity lacrosse team has never been an outstanding team. The 2012 season, however, was different with the arrival of senior defensive player Ethan Rich. Rich, who had never played lacrosse before the 2012 season, dominated the field with his "Hulk" (from the 2012 movie The Avengers) like muscles and powerful stick skills. Rich graduated with honors and went on to attend Virginia Tech, where his roommate Douglas Hearney plays lacrosse for the club team. Rich still has his defensive pole but he may never play in an official game again.
