His real name is Clayton M. Abernathy. Hawk was born in Denver, Colorado. His original rank was that of O-6 (Colonel). He was promoted to an O-7 (Brigadier General), and eventually became an O-8 (Major General).
He is the original field commander of the G.I. Joe Team. he comes from a wealthy family, whose influence enabled him to enroll in West Point. His primary military specialty is strategic command operations and his secondary military specialties are Ranger, artillery, intelligence as well as radar. He graduated at the top of his class, and was able to gain battlefield experience in several trouble spots, before he got his General's star and was promoted to honcho the entire G.I. Joe operation. He graduated from Advanced Infantry Training and Covert Ops School. He served on Cadre, North Atlantic Range Command and USA ENG COM EVR Missile & Radar Training (classified). He is a qualified expert in the use of the M16 rifle and M-1911A1 automatic pistol. He is described as "keenly intelligent and perceptive and quite capable of totally selfless acts in support of his teammates. An excellent leader!"
