Railway Inspectorate Report
Since the earliest days of public railways in the UK, railway accidents were investigated by the Railway Inspectorate, an independent body of experts. In the case of the Hawes Junction collision, the investigating officer was Major Pringle, and his report is reproduced here:

Famous quotes containing the words railway and/or report:
“Her personality had an architectonic quality; I think of her when I see some of the great London railway termini, especially St. Pancras, with its soot and turrets, and she overshadowed her own daughters, whom she did not understandmy mother, who liked things to be nice; my dotty aunt. But my mother had not the strength to put even some physical distance between them, let alone keep the old monster at emotional arms length.”
—Angela Carter (19401992)
“There was ... a large, shaggy dog, whose nose, report said, was full of porcupine quills. I can testify that he looked very sober. This is the usual fortune of pioneer dogs, for they have to face the brunt of the battle for their race.... When a generation or two have used up all their enemies darts, their successors lead a comparatively easy life. We owe to our fathers analogous blessings.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
