Haven (Star Trek: The Next Generation) - Plot

Plot

The Federation starship Enterprise arrives at the planet Haven, where the ship's Betazoid Counselor Deanna Troi has been summoned by her mother Lwaxana. Troi had previously been set into a pre-arranged marriage to the young human doctor, Wyatt Miller, and his parents have since tracked down Lwaxana to enforce the marriage. Lwaxana and the Millers are welcome aboard the Enterprise. While the parents argue over which traditions, human or Betazoid, will be honored at the ceremony, Troi and Wyatt attempt to get to know each other but find it difficult. Troi is still in love with Commander William Riker, while Wyatt has had numerous dreams of another woman which he has fallen in love with, initially believing her to be Troi communicating telepathically with him. The two struggle with personal turmoils before the ceremony is to take place.

The Enterprise learns of an unmarked vessel approaching Haven. Captain Picard recognizes it as Tarellian, a race that they had thought were wiped out by a highly lethal and contagious virus. When they contact the ship, they find a handful of Tarellian refugees that were traveling at sub-light speeds to Haven in hopes of finding an isolated place away from Human contact, to live out the rest of their lives. Picard insists they cannot go to the planet for fear of spreading the virus. Wyatt recognizes one of the Tarellians, Ariana, from his dreams, and she too recognizes Wyatt, knowing that they would some day meet. Wyatt tells Dr. Crusher that he will beam some medical supplies to them, but without alerting Troi, his parents, or the rest of the crew, he transports himself aboard the Tarellian vessel with the supplies. The crew discovers his transport, and Wyatt's parents demand Picard bring Wyatt back to the Enterprise, but Picard cannot, as Wyatt has since been infected with the Tarellian virus. Wyatt promises his parents, Troi, and the rest of the crew that everything will be all right, as he knew that this would be destiny, and is happy to try to help cure the Tarellian virus. Wyatt convinces the Tarellians to leave Haven and search for help elsewhere, Troi wishing him the best.

Famous quotes containing the word plot:

The plot was most interesting. It belonged to no particular age, people, or country, and was perhaps the more delightful on that account, as nobody’s previous information could afford the remotest glimmering of what would ever come of it.
    Charles Dickens (1812–1870)

The plot! The plot! What kind of plot could a poet possibly provide that is not surpassed by the thinking, feeling reader? Form alone is divine.
    Franz Grillparzer (1791–1872)

If you need a certain vitality you can only supply it yourself, or there comes a point, anyway, when no one’s actions but your own seem dramatically convincing and justifiable in the plot that the number of your days concocts.
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)
