Famous quotes containing the word education:

It’s fairly obvious that American education is a cultural flop. Americans are not a well-educated people culturally, and their vocational education often has to be learned all over again after they leave school and college. On the other hand, they have open quick minds and if their education has little sharp positive value, it has not the stultifying effects of a more rigid training.
    Raymond Chandler (1888–1959)

What does education often do? It makes a straight-cut ditch of a free, meandering brook.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

In England, I was quite struck to see how forward the girls are made—a child of 10 years old, will chat and keep you company, while her parents are busy or out etc.—with the ease of a woman of 26. But then, how does this education go on?—Not at all: it absolutely stops short.
    Frances Burney (1752–1840)
