Harpo Productions

Harpo Productions

Harpo Productions, Inc. is an incorporated US-based multimedia production company founded by Oprah Winfrey (the name 'Harpo' is 'Oprah' spelled backwards, and was the name of her on-screen husband in The Color Purple). It also includes Harpo Films (the company's film production company) and Harpo Radio, Inc. (the company's radio division). It is based in Chicago, and Harpo Studios (the company's TV production studio) is located in the Near West Side neighborhood of Chicago.

The land where the studio now sits once housed the 2nd Regiment Armory that was used as a makeshift morgue for victims of the capsizing of the steamer SS Eastland. The 88,000-square-foot (8,200 m2) facility was renovated and opened in the late 1980s for use by The Oprah Winfrey Show.

Famous quotes containing the words harpo and/or productions:

Despite everybody who has been born and has died, the world has just gone on. I mean, look at Napoleon—but we went right on. Look at Harpo Marx—the world went around, it didn’t stop for a second. It’s sad but true. John Kennedy, right?
Bob Dylan [Robert Allen Zimmerman] (b. 1941)

Most new things are not good, and die an early death; but those which push themselves forward and by slow degrees force themselves on the attention of mankind are the unconscious productions of human wisdom, and must have honest consideration, and must not be made the subject of unreasoning prejudice.
    Thomas Brackett Reed (1839–1902)
