Foundation
Using psychohistory, Seldon determines the right time and place to set up a new society, one that would replace the collapsing Galactic Empire by sheer force of social pressure, but over only a thousand-year time span, rather than the ten-to-thirty-thousand-year time span that would normally have been required. The Foundation is placed on Terminus, a planet entirely populated by scientists and their families. The planet was originally occupied to create the Encyclopedia Galactica, a vast compilation of the knowledge of a dying galactic empire.

Famous quotes containing the word foundation:
“No genuine equality, no real freedom, no true manhood or womanhood can exist on any foundation save that of pecuniary independence. As a right over a mans subsistence is a power over his moral being, so a right over a womans subsistence enslaves her will, degrades her pride and vitiates her whole moral nature.”
—Susan B. Anthony (18201907)
“A full belly to the labourer was, in my opinion, the foundation of public morals and the only source of real public peace.”
—William Cobbett (17621835)
“Surely the only sound foundation for a civilization is a sound state of mind.”
—E.M. (Edward Morgan)
