Hardware-based full disk encryption (FDE) is available from many hard disk drive (HDD) vendors, including: Seagate Technology, Hitachi, Western Digital, Samsung, Toshiba and also solid-state drive vendors such as Samsung, Micron and Integral. The symmetric encryption key is maintained independently from the CPU, thus removing computer memory as a potential attack vector. In relation to hard disk drives, the term 'Self-Encrypting Drive' (SED) is in more common usage.
Hardware-FDE has 2 major components: the hardware encryptor and the data store. There are currently 3 varieties of hardware-FDE in common use:
- Hard Disk Drive (HDD) FDE (usually referred to as SED)
- Enclosed hard disk drive FDE
- Bridge and Chipset (BC) FDE

Famous quotes containing the words full and/or disk:
“Only he who can view his own past as an abortion sprung from compulsion and need can use it to full advantage in the present. For what one has lived is at best comparable to a beautiful statue which has had all its limbs knocked off in transit, and now yields nothing but the precious block out of which the image of ones future must be hewn.”
—Walter Benjamin (18921940)
“Unloved, that beech will gather brown,
This maple burn itself away;
Unloved, the sun-flower, shining fair,
Ray round with flames her disk of seed,
And many a rose-carnation feed
With summer spice the humming air;”
—Alfred Tennyson (18091892)
