Happy Eater

Happy Eater was a chain of family-orientated roadside restaurants that operated in the United Kingdom until 1997. The chain was established in 1973 by Michael Pickard to rival Little Chef, the roadside's dominant chain. The restaurants offered similar fare to Little Chef, such as English breakfasts and fish & chips. It provided facilities for children such as Lego sets and (unlike Little Chef) outdoor playground equipment. Outlets were mostly located in South East England, the Midlands and along the A1 corridor.

The chain received widespread media attention in the early 1990s as a restaurant favoured by the Prime Minister John Major. The media often brought attention to the fact that the restaurant's logo seemed as if it was attempting to induce vomiting, and what this symbolised about the chain's fare.

Famous quotes containing the words happy and/or eater:

The only happy talkers are dandies who extract pleasure from the very perishability of their material and who would not be able to tolerate the isolation of all other forms of composition; for most good talkers, when they have run down, are miserable; they know that they have betrayed themselves, that they have taken material which should have a life of its own, to dispense it in noises upon the air.
    Cyril Connolly (1903–1974)

If ye had not plowed with my heifer, ye had not found out my riddle.
Bible: Hebrew Samson, in Judges, 14:18.

To the men who had answered his riddle, “Out of the eater came forth meat, and out of the strong came forth sweetness.”
