The hanging parrots are birds in the parrot genus Loriculus . This is a group of small parrots from tropical southern Asia.

These little parrots, about 13 cm (5 in) long, are mostly green plumaged and short-tailed. Often head coloring helps to identify individual species. These parrots are unique among birds for their ability to sleep upside down.

Famous quotes containing the words hanging and/or parrot:

    Then came Corinna in a long loose gown,
    Her white neck hid with tresses hanging down,
    Resembling fair Semiramis going to bed,
    Ovid (Publius Ovidius Naso)

    The island dreams under the dawn
    And great boughs drop tranquillity;
    The peahens dance on a smooth lawn,
    A parrot sways upon a tree,
    Raging at his own image in the enamelled sea.
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)
