In 2010, Matthew Wilkening of AOL Radio ranked the "official" Hampster Dance song at #79 on the list of the 100 Worst Songs Ever, stating that "This annoying-on-purpose, chipmunks-on-speed bit of nonsense was the grandfather of today's 'Rickroll.'" The song was also featured in the 2005 film Are We There Yet? starring Ice Cube. The song also served as the film's unofficial theme song, as it was not only used in the actual movie, but several TV spots for the film featured the track.

Famous quotes containing the words popular culture, popular and/or culture:

Popular culture is seductive; high culture is imperious.
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)

The poet needs a ground in popular tradition on which he may work, and which, again, may restrain his art within the due temperance. It holds him to the people, supplies a foundation for his edifice; and, in furnishing so much work done to his hand, leaves him at leisure, and in full strength for the audacities of his imagination.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

If mass communications blend together harmoniously, and often unnoticeably, art, politics, religion, and philosophy with commercials, they bring these realms of culture to their common denominator—the commodity form. The music of the soul is also the music of salesmanship. Exchange value, not truth value, counts.
    Herbert Marcuse (1898–1979)
