Spread of The Bektashi Order

Bektashism spread from Anatolia through the Ottomans primarily into the Balkans, where its leaders (known as dedes or babas) helped convert many to Islam. During the Ottoman period Bektashi tekkes were set up in Egypt and Iraq, but the order did not take root in these countries.

Famous quotes containing the words spread and/or order:

Everywhere, spread all over in characters of living light, blazing on all its ample folds, as they float over the sea and over the land, and in every wind under the whole heavens, that other sentiment, dear to every true American heart,—Liberty and Union, now and for ever; one and inseparable!
    Daniel Webster (1782–1852)

I marvel at the many ways we, as black people, bend but do not break in order to survive. This astonishes me, and what excites me I write about. Everyone of us is a wonder. Everyone of us has a story.
    Kristin Hunter (b. 1931)
