Hadley Richardson - Later Years

Later Years

After they separated and divorced in Paris, Hadley saw her first husband only once again—she and Mowrer ran into him while vacationing in Wyoming. She lived to be 87, and a 1992 book is devoted to her life. However, when she left her marriage to Hemingway, she left behind the publicity. She died on January 22, 1979 in Lakeland, Florida.

In 1992, the definitive biography of Hadley Richardson, Hadley by Gioia Diliberto, was published. The book, which was based on extensive research including the author's exclusive access to a series of taped conversations with Richardson, was reissued in 2011 as Paris Without End: The True Story of Hemingway's First Wife. In 2011 a book entitled 'The Paris Wife: A Novel' was published, telling the entire story of Hadley Richardson's relationship with Hemingway in "her voice." Although declared a work of fiction, the narrative was faithful to the facts as known.

Famous quotes containing the word years:

After Buddha was dead, his shadow was still shown for centuries in a cave—a tremendous, gruesome shadow. God is dead; but given the way of man, there may still be caves for thousands of years in which his shadow will be shown.—And we—we still have to vanquish his shadow, too.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)

To me, literature is a calling, even a kind of salvation. It connects me with an enterprise that is over 2,000 years old. What do we have from the past? Art and thought. That’s what lasts. That’s what continues to feed people and given them an idea of something better. A better state of one’s feelings or simply the idea of a silence in one’s self that allows one to think or to feel. Which to me is the same.
    Susan Sontag (b. 1933)
