Hackney London Borough Council

Hackney London Borough Council is the local government authority for the London Borough of Hackney in Greater London, UK. It is one of 32 such London borough councils in the capital of London. The council is unusual in the United Kingdom local government system in that its executive function is controlled by a directly elected mayor of Hackney, currently Jules Pipe. Hackney comprises 19 wards, each electing three Councillors. Following the May 2010 election, Hackney London Borough Council consists of 50 Labour Party councillors, four Conservative Party councillors and three Liberal Democrat councillors. The council was created by the London Government Act 1963 whereby it replaced three local authorities: Hackney Metropolitan Borough Council, Shoreditch Metropolitan Borough Council and Stoke Newington Metropolitan Borough Council.

Famous quotes containing the words hackney, london and/or council:

As to “Don Juan,” confess ... that it is the sublime of that there sort of writing; it may be bawdy, but is it not good English? It may be profligate, but is it not life, is it not the thing? Could any man have written it who has not lived in the world? and tooled in a post-chaise? in a hackney coach? in a Gondola? against a wall? in a court carriage? in a vis a vis? on a table? and under it?
    George Gordon Noel Byron (1788–1824)

One of the many to whom, from straightened circumstances, a consequent inability to form the associations they would wish, and a disinclination to mix with the society they could obtain, London is as complete a solitude as the plains of Syria.
    Charles Dickens (1812–1870)

There by some wrinkled stones round a leafless tree
With beards askew, their eyes dull and wild
Twelve ragged men, the council of charity
Wandering the face of the earth a fatherless child....
    Allen Tate (1899–1979)
