Grigore Vieru - Death

Death

Vieru died in a car accident in Cahul on 16 January 2009. At the time, he was out with friends celebrating the birthday of Mihai Eminescu, a 19th-century Romanian poet. He died of his injuries two days later and was buried on 20 January. It was estimated that his funeral was attended by about 10,000 people. Entire streets and boulevards in the capital city were shut down for that reason. Vieru's funeral was also broadcast live by Teleradio Moldova.

Famous quotes containing the word death:

You mustn’t be afraid of death. When this ship sailed, death sailed on her.
—Charles Larkworthy. Denison Clift. Anton Lorenzen (Bela Lugosi)

... probably all of the women in this book are working to make part of the same quilt to keep us from freezing to death in a world that grows harsher and bleaker—where male is the norm and the ideal human being is hard, violent and cold: a macho rock. Every woman who makes of her living something strong and good is sharing bread with us.
    Marge Piercy (b. 1936)

Fatigue dulls the pain, but awakes enticing thoughts of death. So! that is the way in which you are tempted to overcome your loneliness—by making the ultimate escape from life..—No! It may be that death is to be your ultimate gift to life: it must not be an act of treachery against it.
    Dag Hammarskjöld (1905–1961)
