Green Dragon Crescent Blade - in Popular Culture

In Popular Culture

  • The weapon appears in several video games made by Koei, but under incorrectly translated names. For example, it is called the "Black Dragon" in Kessen 2. However, in the Dynasty Warriors series it is named the Blue Dragon Blade. This is likely because qing (青?) also means blue or blue-green, and interpretation depends on time period in question and context of use. In this particular case, Green is most accurate.
  • In the anime and manga series Ikki Tousen and visual novel and anime Koihime Musō, this weapon is wielded by Unchou Kanu (関羽 雲長, Kan'u Unchō?), which is the Japanese name of Guan Yu.
  • In the card game Magic: The Gathering, the weapon is portrayed in the card "Wielding the Green Dragon" from the set Portal: Three Kingdoms.
  • Touhou Project character Youmu Konpaku even mentions the weapon upon defeating Hong Meiling. in which she asks why the latter does not wield it. But Youmu only hears them in stories, so this information may be on purpose.

Famous quotes containing the words popular culture, popular and/or culture:

Popular culture entered my life as Shirley Temple, who was exactly my age and wrote a letter in the newspapers telling how her mother fixed spinach for her, with lots of butter.... I was impressed by Shirley Temple as a little girl my age who had power: she could write a piece for the newspapers and have it printed in her own handwriting.
    Adrienne Rich (b. 1929)

The new sound-sphere is global. It ripples at great speed across languages, ideologies, frontiers and races.... The economics of this musical esperanto is staggering. Rock and pop breed concentric worlds of fashion, setting and life-style. Popular music has brought with it sociologies of private and public manner, of group solidarity. The politics of Eden come loud.
    George Steiner (b. 1929)

In society, in the best institutions of men, it is easy to detect a certain precocity. When we should still be growing children, we are already little men. Give me a culture which imports much muck from the meadows, and deepens the soil,—not that which trusts to heating manures, and improved implements, and modes of culture only!
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
