Famous quotes containing the words accounts and/or delusion:
“The mystical nature of American consumption accounts for its joylessness. We spend a great deal of time in stores, but if we dont seem to take much pleasure in our buying, its because were engaged in the acts of sacrifice and self-definition. Abashed in the presence of expensive merchandise, we recognize ourselves ... as supplicants admitted to a shrine.”
—Lewis H. Lapham (b. 1935)
“Again and again, faith in a possible satisfaction of the human race breaks through at the very moments of most zealous discord because humankind will never be able to live and work without this consoling delusion of its ascent into morality, without this dream of final and ultimate accord.”
—Stefan Zweig (18811942)
