Grand Sefton Steeplechase

The Grand Sefton Steeplechase was run at Aintree Racecourse, the horse racing course in Aintree, Merseyside, England, for one hundred years from 1865 to 1965. Aintree is also home of the Grand National, It was part of the autumn meeting and was run over a distance of just under three miles.

Originally, the Grand Sefton was one of the most important events of the autumn, but after the Second World War its popularity waned as Aintree's fortunes foundered. In 2003, the race was revived and run on the first day of the November Becher Meeting.

Famous quotes containing the word grand:

The grand principles of virtue and honor, however they may be distorted by arbitrary codes, are the same the world over: and where these principles are concerned, the right or wrong of any action appears the same to the uncultivated as to the enlightened mind.
    Herman Melville (1819–1891)
