Grand Duke Michael Nikolaevich of Russia - Marriage and Issue

Marriage and Issue

On 16 August 1857, he married Princess Cecily Auguste of Baden (1839–1891), daughter of Leopold, Grand Duke of Baden and Sophie of Sweden. Cecily adopted the name Olga Fedorovna, and had the following children with him:

  • Grand Duke Nicholas Mikhailovich of Russia (1859–1919).
  • Grand Duchess Anastasia Mikhailovna of Russia (1860–1922).
  • Grand Duke Michael Mikhailovich of Russia (1861–1929).
  • Grand Duke George Mikhailovich of Russia (1863–1919).
  • Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich (Sandro) (1866–1933).
  • Grand Duke Sergei Mikhailovich of Russia (1869–1918).
  • Grand Duke Alexei Mikhailovich of Russia (1875–1895).

He served for a long time (1862–1882) as the Governor General of Caucasia, being seated in Tbilisi, the town which most of his children remembered as the home of their childhood. In the course of his life, four members of his family ruled as Emperors of Russia: his father, Nicholas I; his brother, Alexander II; his nephew, Alexander III; and his grand-nephew, Nicholas II. He served all of them loyally. He died in Cannes, France, on 18 December 1909.

Famous quotes containing the words marriage and/or issue:

Divorce is probably of nearly the same date as marriage. I believe, however, that marriage is some weeks the more ancient.
    Voltaire [François Marie Arouet] (1694–1778)

Parents are led to believe that they must be consistent, that is, always respond to the same issue the same way. Consistency is good up to a point but your child also needs to understand context and subtlety . . . much of adult life is governed by context: what is appropriate in one setting is not appropriate in another; the way something is said may be more important than what is said. . . .
    Stanley I. Greenspan (20th century)
