Future Works
There are plans to increase the capacity of the Northbridge Tunnel to three lanes in each direction. The existing breakdown shoulders will be removed to accommodate the extra lanes without modifying the tunnel's structure. The proposed removal of the breakdown lanes has previously been criticised by the state Opposition, and the RAC raised concerns about emergency response times. As part of the upgrade, Main Roads Western Australia has an Incident Response Plan, including a dedicated towing service, and the fire control system will be improved. The works are scheduled to be completed in May 2013, in conjunction with works to widen the Mitchell Freeway. The works are designed to improve the traffic flow in the Perth CBD, which will be affected by construction projects such as the development of Elizabeth Quay.

Famous quotes containing the words future and/or works:
“... the loss of belief in future states is politically, though certainly not spiritually, the most significant distinction between our present period and the centuries before. And this loss is definite. For no matter how religious our world may turn again, or how much authentic faith still exists in it, or how deeply our moral values may be rooted in our religious systems, the fear of hell is no longer among the motives which would prevent or stimulate the actions of a majority.”
—Hannah Arendt (19061975)
“I lay my eternal curse on whomsoever shall now or at any time hereafter make schoolbooks of my works and make me hated as Shakespeare is hated. My plays were not designed as instruments of torture. All the schools that lust after them get this answer, and will never get any other.”
—George Bernard Shaw (18561950)
