Clan Politics
Clans, as understood in the context of Uzbekistan, can be broadly defined as regional patronage networks and are not necessarily kin-based. These informal structures proved to be very important in the functioning of the Uzbek state. According to mainstream analysis of Uzbekistani politics, the three main clans are the Samarkand clan, the Tashkent clan and the Ferghana clan. President Karimov comes from the Samarkand clan, generally speaking the ruling clan. However, the central power needs also to balance between the different clans and people from the two other ones, mainly the Tashkent clan, are often found at high positions in the state.
