Golden Bandicoot - Conservation Efforts

Conservation Efforts

A national recovery plan for the Golden Bandicoot and the Golden-backed Tree Rat (Mesembriomys macrurus ) was established in 2003 for a 5 year period between 2004-2009 with 3 management priorities summarized as follows:

  1. Form management arrangements between agencies, land managers, and land owners
  2. Form a multiple species recovery team to attack the issue of multiple species decline in northern Australia
  3. Monitor population trends
  4. Translocate Golden Bandicoots from Marchinbar Island to two other islands and follow up on said populations
  5. Identify the key components that affect critical weight range of tropical savannah mammals
  6. Develop educational materials to effectively communicate to stakeholders
  7. Inform and involve the community in recovery process

Both the Parks and Wildlife Service and the Gumurr Marthakal Rangers are involved in a collaborative program to monitor existing populations, search for new populations, and look for opportunities to translocate specimen.

Famous quotes containing the words conservation and/or efforts:

A country grows in history not only because of the heroism of its troops on the field of battle, it grows also when it turns to justice and to right for the conservation of its interests.
    Aristide Briand (1862–1932)

In all our efforts to provide “advantages” we have actually produced the busiest, most competitive, highly pressured and over-organized generation of youngsters in our history—and possibly the unhappiest. We seem hell-bent on eliminating much of childhood.
    Eda Le Shan (b. 1922)
