In 1978, the Church of Scientology purchased the property on which Gold Base would be established, previously a resort that had been popular with Hollywood figures. For several decades, the location was not disclosed to many members of the church, including Scientologists privy to insider information. Until the mid-2000s, the location of Gold Base and the presence of international management there were kept secret, even to Scientologists at lower organizations.
