  • Q-inspection (US): Also quarterly or periodic inspection, a federally-mandated safety inspection performed on a locomotive every 92 operating days.
  • Quiet Zone (US): A designation by the Federal Railroad Administration that removes the requirement for train operators to sound their horn when approaching each public crossing. Several safety upgrades must be implemented at each crossing in order to receive the designation.
