Glenwood (Metro-North Station) - Abandoned Power Plant

Abandoned Power Plant

Between the Glenwood station and the Hudson River lies the abandoned Yonkers Power Station of the New York Central & Hudson River Railroad, a massive building which was constructed between 1904 and 1906 to hold electrical generators to provide power for the electrification of the railroad.

Although there were plans to adapt the building for residential use, these have not come to fruition, and in 2008 the Preservation League of New York State named the plant as one of the seven most endangered sites in the state.

Famous quotes containing the words abandoned, power and/or plant:

The Good and Great must ever shun
    That reckless and abandoned one
Who stoops to perpetrate a pun.
Lewis Carroll [Charles Lutwidge Dodgson] (1832–1898)

The piety of the Hebrew prophets purges their grossness. The circumcision is an example of the power of poetry to raise the low and offensive.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

If church prelates, past or present, had even an inkling of physiology they’d realise that what they term this inner ugliness creates and nourishes the hearing ear, the seeing eye, the active mind, and energetic body of man and woman, in the same way that dirt and dung at the roots give the plant its delicate leaves and the full-blown rose.
    Sean O’Casey (1884–1964)
