Glenroy Railway Station - History

History

Glenroy station opened on 24 January 1887, the railway having opened in 1872 as part of the North East railway to Wodonga. In the 1880s the area was virtually uninhabited country, with the station opening and associated extension of steam operated suburban services to Broadmeadows being driven by the 'Land Boom' in Melbourne of the period and corrupt politicians.

A goods siding was provided in 1908, being extended in 1950 for the nearby flour mill. Hand gates protected the Glenroy Road level crossing until 1965 when boom barriers were provided. The original station buildings were provided in 1886, being reconstructed in 1976, and upgraded to a Premium Station in 1999.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

When we of the so-called better classes are scared as men were never scared in history at material ugliness and hardship; when we put off marriage until our house can be artistic, and quake at the thought of having a child without a bank-account and doomed to manual labor, it is time for thinking men to protest against so unmanly and irreligious a state of opinion.
    William James (1842–1910)

No one is ahead of his time, it is only that the particular variety of creating his time is the one that his contemporaries who are also creating their own time refuse to accept.... For a very long time everybody refuses and then almost without a pause almost everybody accepts. In the history of the refused in the arts and literature the rapidity of the change is always startling.
    Gertrude Stein (1874–1946)

I am not a literary man.... I am a man of science, and I am interested in that branch of Anthropology which deals with the history of human speech.
    —J.A.H. (James Augustus Henry)
