Glass Marimba - Glass Marimba in Film Music

Glass Marimba in Film Music

Renowned studio percussionist Emil Richards used his glass marimba on numerous recordings, as it was part of his giant Emil Richards Collection. He brought it to sessions to see if composers wanted to use it along with or in place of glockenspiel, often doubling the part in order to bring new sound and texture to the music. Its range is middle C (C4), up two octaves to C6. Emil purchased his glass marimba in India while on his honeymoon in 1972. Specifically, Emil recalls them being bought from a store in Old Delhi; the storekeeper got Emil’s attention, as he was playing a glass set of bells with a cobra around his neck. Glass marimbas were more difficult to come by in the United States until later, when they started being manufactured there.

    Lay not that flattering unction to your soul,
    That not your trespass but my madness speaks;
    It will but skin and film the ulcerous place,
    Whilst rank corruption, mining all within,
    Infects unseen.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

    I am advised to give her music a’ mornings; they say it will
    penetrate.
