Reasons For Failure
Similar to the Maginot Line, the Gin Drinkers Line was generally considered to be a complete failure. The line and the whole of Kowloon were abandoned by the British troops in just two days. There can be said to be three main reasons:
- Insufficient troops: although the hardware was sound, there just were not enough British soldiers to maximise the Line's potential. For example, the Redoubt could have fitted over 120 men but was garrisoned by only 30.
- Insufficient training: most of the Hong Kong Garrison were from India, Canada and Scotland. Most were new recruits lacking experience and training.
- Underestimation of the Japanese: the British assumed that the Japanese did not wage night battles and relaxed their guard; they were also confident in the Line's capabilities.

Famous quotes containing the words reasons for, reasons and/or failure:
“While there are practical and sometimes moral reasons for the decomposition of the family, it coincides neither with what most people in society say they desire nor, especially in the case of children, with their best interests.”
—Robert Neelly Bellah (20th century)
“In looking back over the college careers of those who for various reasons have been prominent in undergraduate life ... one cannot help noticing that these men have nearly always shown from the start an interest in the lives of their fellow students. A large acquaintance means that many persons are dependent on a man and conversely that he himself is dependent on many. Success necessarily means larger responsibilities, and responsibilities mean many friends.”
—Franklin D. Roosevelt (18821945)
“What weve got here is failure to communicate.”
—Donn Pearce, U.S. screenwriter, Frank R. Pierson, and Stuart Rosenberg. Captain (Strother Martin)
