German Submarine U-864 - Books

Books

CODE NAME CAESAR: The Secret Hunt for U-boat 864 During World War Two by Jerome Preisler with Kenneth Sewell places the submarine's mission in its full historical context as part of a longstanding, formal program of technology and personnel transfers between Germany and Japan. The book contends that the January 9 raid on Bergen by the 617 "Dambuster" Squadron and 9 Bomber Squadron was deliberately intended to destroy U-864 while it was in Bergen's fortresslike Bunker Bruno for repairs--and that downed British airmen were killed in violation of the Geneva Conventions while the attack was in progress. It also uses primary source materials to dispel the oft-repeated historical inaccuracy that HMS Venturer was diverted to intercept U-864 as the result of ULTRA intercepts, and reveals for the first time the critical part MI-6 and Norwegian coast watchers played in tracking and targeting the submarine.
