Gerald Richard Barnes - Schools

Schools

Bishop Gerald Barnes says he supports Catholic education; but he is known for closing three schools. He first closed Mount Saint Joseph's in Barstow, California. In 2008, he closed Precious Blood School in Banning, California. In 2009, he closed St. Mary's Regional Catholic School in Apple Valley, California; even though it was the only Catholic school in the High Desert.

Famous quotes containing the word schools:

To be a Negro is to participate in a culture of poverty and fear that goes far deeper than any law for or against discrimination.... After the racist statutes are all struck down, after legal equality has been achieved in the schools and in the courts, there remains the profound institutionalized and abiding wrong that white America has worked on the Negro for so long.
    Michael Harrington (1928–1989)

In truth, the legitimate contention is, not of one age or school of literary art against another, but of all successive schools alike, against the stupidity which is dead to the substance, and the vulgarity which is dead to form.
    Walter Pater (1839–1894)

The shrewd guess, the fertile hypothesis, the courageous leap to a tentative conclusion—these are the most valuable coin of the thinker at work. But in most schools guessing is heavily penalized and is associated somehow with laziness.
    Jerome S. Bruner (b. 1915)
