Georges-Louis Le Sage - Kinetic Theory

Kinetic Theory

Le Sage also tried to explain the nature of gases. This attempt was appreciated by Rudolf Clausius and James Clerk Maxwell. Maxwell wrote: "His theory of impact is faulty, but his explanation of the expansive force of gases" "is essentially the same as in the dynamical theory, as it now stands." Le Sage also clearly pointed out, that he was not the first one who described such a mechanism, and referred to Lucretius, Gassendi, Hermann and Bernoulli.

Famous quotes containing the words kinetic and/or theory:

The poem has a social effect of some kind whether or not the poet wills it to have. It has kinetic force, it sets in motion ... [ellipsis in source] elements in the reader that would otherwise be stagnant.
    Denise Levertov (b. 1923)

It makes no sense to say what the objects of a theory are,
beyond saying how to interpret or reinterpret that theory in another.
Willard Van Orman Quine (b. 1908)
