George Giffard - World War I

World War I

His unit saw extensive service in the East African campaign against the German forces under von Lettow-Vorbeck. He rose to command a column of two battalions of the KAR, "Gifcol". Giffard was wounded, was awarded the DSO and was mentioned in despatches four times.

Famous quotes containing the words war i, world and/or war:

War is a blessing compared with national degradation.
    Andrew Jackson (1767–1845)

The only human beings I have thoroughly admired and respected in the world have been those who carried the load of the world with a smile, and who, in the face of anxieties that would have knocked me clean out, never showed a tremor. Such men and women end by owning us, soul and body, and our allegiance can never be shaken. We are only too glad to be owned. Religion is nothing but this.
    Henry Brooks Adams (1838–1918)

He was ... a degenerate gambler. That is, a man who gambled simply to gamble and must lose. As a hero who goes to war must die. Show me a gambler and I’ll show you a loser, show me a hero and I’ll show you a corpse.
    Mario Puzo (b. 1920)
