George F. Richards - Early Church Callings

Early Church Callings

Richards was ordained an elder in the LDS Church at age fifteen, which was quite young, though not unheard of. He received the Endowment shortly after this. Among various early callings he held were those of home missionary and president of the ward Young Men's Mutual Improvement Association (YMMIA). In 1890, Richards became a second counselor in the Tooele Stake Presidency.

In 1893, Richards was ordained a patriarch by Francis M. Lyman. At age 32, Richards was one of the youngest men to have ever held this office in the church.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or church:

    Foolish prater, What dost thou
    So early at my window do?
    Cruel bird, thou’st ta’en away
    A dream out of my arms to-day;
    A dream that ne’er must equall’d be
    By all that waking eyes may see.
    Thou this damage to repair
    Nothing half so sweet and fair,
    Nothing half so good, canst bring,
    Tho’ men say thou bring’st the Spring.
    Abraham Cowley (1618–1667)

    There warn’t anybody at the church, except maybe a hog or two, for there warn’t any lock on the door, and hogs likes a puncheon floor in summertime because it’s cool. If you notice, most folks don’t go to church only when they’ve got to; but a hog is different.
    Mark Twain [Samuel Langhorne Clemens] (1835–1910)
